Congratulations to the teachers who were awarded grants from the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence!  Communication and technology were at the forefront, and each grant will encourage 21st Century learning.


SPARTAN SWIMMERS SWEEP NEAC Noah Bassista and Coach Cordon at NEAC meet

Congratulations to Boardman's Swim and Dive teams for winning the NEAC Championship on Saturday, January 5.  Special Recognition went to Spartan Coach Carlo Cordon who was named NEAC Coach of the Year, and to junior Noah Basista who was named "NEAC Male swimmer of the meet." 


Get ready for some entertainment Cavs fans!  The Boardman Spartan Marching Band will be playing at the game on Friday, January 4.  Band Director Tom Ruggieri says this is the 5th year that Boardman's band has played at the "Q".

WINTER BAND CONCERTS JANUARY 9 & 10 honors band with flute and other instruments

Boardman Center Intermediate and Glenwood Junior High proudly present two great winter band concerts on Wednesday, January 9 and Thursday, January 10!  

The 5th and 7th grade band winter concert is Wednesday, January 9.  The 6th and 8th grade band winter concert featuring our Glenwood 8th grade jazz ensemble is Thursday, January 10.  Both concerts are at 7 PM in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center.



Winter Recess begins December 24.

Classes resume on Wednesday, January 2.

A Holiday project just before break at Center Intermediate School has everyone smiling!  The entire 5th grade split into two groups, half made tie blankets to send to children at Akron Children’s Hospital.  The other half were decorating book marks and making little holiday packages for local nursing homes.

The annual Boardman High School Holiday Jazz Concert  is Thursday, December 20 at 7 PM in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.  All three of Boardman’s high school jazz ensembles will perform a mix of holiday selections and some standard jazz pieces.

Students from K-12 stepped up to help a recent Boardman graduate in a Holiday Service Project for our military men and women who won't be home for the holidays.  Hundreds of handmade cards and letters will be sent via the Blue Star Mothers of America Organization.


The BHS Choral Department under the direction of Linda M. Smrek and her assistant, Laura Kotheimer, will present their annual Winter Concert on Wednesday, December 5 at 7:00 in the BPAC.


Attention all  K-8 parents.   You are invited to a public meeting at Center Intermediate on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at 5:30 to find out more about an ODOT grant program called Safer Routes to Schools. Find out how our community might be eligible for up to $400,000 for better lighting, sidewalks, curbs, crosswalks, etc. ---The goal is safer ways to walk and bike to school.

On Wednesday, November 14, all Boardman High School Health Classes  welcomed “Stop The Bleed” trainer, Amanda Lencyk. The Mercy Health Trauma Coordinator  returned to Boardman to work with 9th graders in a hands-on program proven to save lives.  Dozens of Boardman Staff members were trained in the program in September.

STADIUM ELEMENTARY ACCEPTS NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL AWARD National Blue Ribbon Award Ceremony, formal accepting the award

Congratulations to parents, students and staff of Stadium Drive Elementary!  The National Blue Ribbon School Award Ceremonies in Washington, D.C. November 7-8 were amazing.  Superintendent Tim Saxton, Stadium Principal Mike Zoccali and teacher Lisa Cooper accepted the award--but the entire district is celebrating this special recognition of the district.  Spartan Proud!

BSTN students will accept an award at the Capital Conference in Columbus on November 12, for producing the winning video in OSBA'S Stand Up For Public Schools Contest.  OSBA will feature the video on its website, as well as award BSTN $750 for the BSTN program.

Boardman Football meets Maple Heights in the Playoffs Friday, November 2 at Maple Heights at 7 PM.  Tickets for adults and students are $8 pre-sale and $9 at the gate. (OHSAA prices)  Tickets go on sale Wednesday through Friday, 8AM-1PM in the high school athletic office.

Superintendent Saxton and the Board of Education congratulated Principal Michael Zoccali and the teachers and staff of Stadium Drive Elementary at the Board Meeting on October 29.  Stadium Drive was selected as a  Blue Ribbon School, and will  receive the  national award in Washington D.C. on November 7-8.  


On Saturday, September 15, Boardman  welcomed an estimated  20,000 spectators to the area-- all here for the 33rd Annual Spartan Cross Country Invitational on the High School campus.  This athletic event is one of the largest meets, not only in Ohio but the entire Midwest.

Center Intermediate Students Donate to Safety Services Memorial students present check to Chief Pitzer

More than 80 fifth graders  from Boardman Center Intermediate's Maroon Team made a special donation at the new Fire Station 71 on Patriot Day.  Students and Staff collected $150 to go toward building a safety services memorial.  The township hopes to break ground on the memorial this spring.  


Students from Stadium Drive Elementary visited the new Boardman Fire Station #71, to plant a tree and mark Patriot Day on September 11.  The students were welcomed by Fire Chief Mark Pitzer and Police Chief Todd Werth, and encouraged to recognize the helpers, the police, fire and first responders.   


Nearly 40 Boardman High School students and district staff members were happy to work up a sweat on September 7, to spruce up a Southside Youngstown neighborhood.   The Emerging Leaders Group has been volunteering for the United Way’s Annual Day of Caring for years, and the students say it’s one of their favorite volunteer experiences.  


The 18th annual BHS Jazz Fest is set for Tuesday, March 27 at 6:45 PM in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.  The event features all 4 jazz ensembles. Special Guest Artist this year is trumpet player extraordinaire Roger Ingram.  Tickets are available at the door, $8 for Adults, $5 for Students, Seniors and Children are free.

February 23 the Spartans basketball team will play host to Austintown Fitch in the last home game of the season.   There are many special events happening at this game.  It is Senior Night, Elementary Night, Game of the Week for WKBN, and NFL player and Spartan Corey Linsley will be attending the game.   Read on for all the details!

Boardman has postponed the Quiz Bowl Invitational that was scheduled for Saturday, January 13 due to severe weather.  The Invitational will now be Saturday March 17.  Boardman was slated to host 10 teams for this inaugural event.

Congratulations to Head Coach Terry O’Halloran for being named the “NEAC Boys and Girls Coach of the Year” at the NEAC Championships held in Wooster on January 6.  Congratulations also go out to two Spartan swimmers who earned MVP honors at the meet.

Power Outage Emergency Plan Well Executed

Power, phones and all wifi were restored about an hour after a power outage in Boardman Township began around 7:30 Monday morning.  Thanks to staff for immediately putting building emergency plans in place to keep all students safe.   Buildings temporarily affected included the High School, Glenwood Jr. High, Center Intermediate and Stadium Drive Elementary.

High School Wins Grant for New Water Fountain/Bottle Stations Water's Cool at School Program

Boardman High School has been selected by the Delta Dental Foundation to receive two brand new drinking fountains/bottle filling stations.  Boardman is among a select group of school districts across Ohio chosen for Delta’s $100,000 Rethink Your Drink: Water’s Cool at School Program.

Public Input Requested Regarding State Testing

The Ohio Senate moved closer to granting more flexibility to local schools Tuesday, March 24th, while also launching a website to solicit public feedback for its new testing review.

Sen. Peggy Lehner (R-Kettering), chairwoman of both the Senate Education Committee and Senate Advisory Committee on Testing, said http://sact.ohiosenate.gov is now online and ready to take public suggestions on how Ohio should address the controversial topic of educational assessments.

Frank Lazzeri, Superintendent of the Boardman Schools, encourages residents to comment on this important issue that affects all public school children before the comment period closes. 

Best Community for Music Education Award

The NAMM Foundation recently recognized Boardman for being one of the "Best Communities for Music Education in America" for 2015.  This is the third time Boardman has been honored with this award and the only local district in the tri-county area to hold this distinction.  The Boardman School District in recent years was also recognized as a Grammy Award school based upon our outstanding K-12 music program.  Congratulations to Boardman's Music Educators for the passion they have for their art and their dedication to the children of our community.

School Calendar 2015-16

The school year will begin a week earlier in 2015 due to the lateness of Labor Day.  The Board of Education adopted the 2015-16 school calendar at its regular January meeting.  This calendar is the "traditional" Boardman calendar except for the earlier start.  That means that we have not shortened our spring recess the way that many other area schools have.

Boardman Band Night 2018 has been rescheduled to Monday, September 17 at 7 PM in Spartan Stadium.

High school bands expected to perform include McDonald,  West Branch, Lowellville, Austintown, Canfield, Howland and Boardman.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.  Senior citizens are admitted free to all Boardman Band events.  Gates open at 6.

Project Mayhem Lights Up The Stage March 23 Rock Orchestra performs in 2017

Friday, March 23, the Boardman High School Rock Orchestra will perform its 12th annual “Project Mayhem” event.  This 2-hour Rock Show combines the talents of the Boardman Orchestra, chart topping songs performed by the Boardman Choir, and a laser light show put on by Lightwave International of Pittsburgh.

Foundation Awards Teacher Grants

The Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence (BSFEE) awarded three teacher grants in December marking the fifth anniversary of its teacher grant program.  For the second straight year, the BSFEE has partnered with the Boardman Education Association to fund teacher innovation in the classroom.  This year's recipients are:


Stadium Drive Elementary is among a select group of schools across the country to receive a National Blue Ribbon Award.  It is one of only 349 Blue Ribbon Schools nationwide, and only 16 in the entire state of Ohio for 2018.   


Free and Reduced Price Meals are available to families who believe they may qualify. If your family chooses to apply please complete a "Free and Reduced Meal Price Application Form." The forms can be obtained and returned (completed) to any school office.

Dr. Ray Guarendi, noted television and radio personality, is coming back to Boardman to talk to parents, teachers and the community at large on the topic of parenting.  The Boardman PTA brought Dr. Ray in over 30 years ago and are once again sponsoring this event.

Boardman Schools Score High Marks in Student Achievement

Boardman Local Schools met 100% of the state indicators earning the grade of an A in achievement on the 2013-2014 Local Report Card released by the Ohio Department of Education.  At each tested grade level (grades 3-11) and in each content area (reading, mathematics, science, social studies and writing), 80% or more students achieved a passing grade on the respective assessment.

Glenwood Jr. High Technology teacher Tim Harker and a team of teachers and staff from Boardman have won a $5,000 Innovative Teacher Mini-Grant from the Turning Foundation. It is one of only 15 grants awarded in a 4 county area.

Please note the time change at all Boardman elementary buildings.  This year, elementary schools will begin promptly at 8:05 AM and end at 2:15 PM.  The elementary school day has been extended by 5 minutes at the start, and by 5 minutes at the end of the day.

Market Street Elementary's New Garden Club, the Sprouting Spartans, is holding its first Plant Sale on Wednesday, May 23 after school from 2:45 until 4:15.  It is hoped this pilot program will grow into a year round effort, using our greenhouse for hands on learning, as well as to encourage healthy eating.

Kindergarten Registration - Thursday, March 8, 2018 kindergarten girls in success by 6 summer program

Registration Day for kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year is Thursday, March 8, 2018.  Times for registration are 9-11 a.m., 1-3 p.m., and 6-8 p.m. in each of our four elementary schools.  It is not necessary for children to accompany their parents.  Read on for a list of items parents must have to register.

The last week of school brought a big surprise for two Boardman 4th graders-A brand new bicycle!    This is the second year that the Boardman Optimist Club has invited all 4th grade students in the Boardman Schools to participate in a Bike Safety Poster Coloring Contest.   


Glenwood Robotics continues to dominate the field, after sweeping the Northeast Ohio Robotics Competition at YSU.  Glenwood's Boardman Team took 1st place, and the  Spartan Team  took second. The Robotics tradition started 24 years ago at Center Intermediate, and still holds strong.

Nearly two dozen volunteers from Boardman High School 's Emerging Leaders Club spent hours Saturday, December 16 at Second Harvest Food Bank.  The students are among 150 members of this growing volunteer group.

2016-2017 School Calendar

During the regular January 2016 meeting, the Boardman Board of Education approved our school calendar for the 2016-17 school year.  Though we begin later than many Mahoning County school districts, classes will commence prior to Labor Day.

2015-16 School Calendar

Every year beginning in September parents begin calling the Superintendent's Office inquiring about the school calendar for the upcoming year.  Why you ask?  Because parents want to schedule vacation time that does not conflict with school.  We all thank you for that!

Glenwood Jr. High Principal Bart Smith is the winner of the 2018 Ohio School Resource Officer Association's Distinguished School Service Award.   Principal Smith received the award in Columbus on June 27.  He was chosen from nominations statewide for his efforts  to support a safe learning environment and to improve school safety.

Congratulations to Glenwood Technology Teacher Tim Harker! He won the Excellence in Education Love of Learning Award for innovation in the classroom.

Mr. Harker established a Makers Club last year, and students love it.  Mr. Harker also received a 3D printer from Inventor Cloud to be used for Makers Club.

Emerging Leaders 'Dig in' at Day of Caring Students scraping and edging sidewalks

Dozens of Volunteers from the High School's Emerging Leaders Group spent  September 1,  "digging in" for the United Way of the Mahoning Valley.   A bus load of Boardman students and nearly a dozen administrators were among more than 850 volunteers who aimed to "Fight Blight" on Youngstown's Eastside.

Ohio families can now get the latest education news, search for schools in their neighborhoods and look at their schools’ report cards right from their smartphones. The Ohio Department of Education today launched a mobile app for iPhone and Android.


Drug Testing Update

Drug testing in Boardman has now gone beyond student testing.  Admistrators, supervisors and Board members have taken the lead by voluntaring to be drug tested.  Superintendent Lazzeri stated, "It would be a double standard for we adults to demand drug testing for students without being held to that same standard".

SAFETY TRAINING: STAFF LEARNS TO 'STOP THE BLEED' stop the bleed training applying a tourniquet

Dozens of  Boardman High School administrators, teachers and staff members learned life saving skills during a recent  "Stop the Bleed" training conducted by Mercy Health.  This nationally recognized program is hands on, and plans are  now in the works to train students in health classes.

LINK CREW WELCOMES FRESHMEN Link crew orientation in stands of gym

Freshmen Orientation is set for Wednesday, August 22 from 8 AM until 12:15 in the gymnasium.  The Link  Crew orientation and transition program is designed to both welcome and support incoming freshmen by assigning them a junior or senior Link Leader as a mentor during their first year.

Congratulations to Center Principal Randy Ebie! He won the Excellence in Education Community and Family Outreach Award from the East Ohio Education Partnership October 17th. 

Mr. Ebie was recognized for the Boardman Center Project that lead to the extreme makeover at the school. He was also recognized for establishing the areas first daily school food pantry at Center.

New Center Middle Entrance

School security remains a high priority in the Boardman Schools.  You may be wondering why a new fence was erected in the alcove near Door #1 at Center Middle School.  This and many other security changes will be made over the upcoming months.


JA It's My Future program was taught to the entire 7th grade at  Glenwood Jr. High on October 8.  The Boardman Rotary funded the program for all 16 classes, reaching a total of 366 students.

Incoming Kindergarten students experienced Safety Village on  August 9.  This  fun hands-on event  allows our newest Spartans to interact with Boardman police and firefighters and to learn valuable lessons as they get ready to start school in just a few weeks.


New School Zone Safety Lights have been installed on Glenwood Avenue between Glenwood Jr. High and the High School.  This was a collaborative effort between the Mahoning County Engineers Office, Boardman Township and Boardman Schools.  Safety is our primary goal for our students, staff, ad community and these lights will help remind drivers and enforce speed limits.


The award-winning Boardman High School Symphony, Chamber and Classical Orchestras will present their annual Spring Orchestra Concert on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00 pm in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.  Our senior solo competition winners of the evening will be Aadam Zocolo on Violin and Jacob Smotzer on Piano.

Boardman residents Bill and Karen Veri are this year’s recipients of the Boardman Civic Association’s Community Service Award.  The Veris have donated a total of  $270,000 to the Spartan Stadium Project, and to date, they  are the largest sole contributor.

Congratulations to Anthony LaMarca, Spartan Class of 2005, on his Grammy Win!  LaMarca is a member of rock band, The War on Drugs.  The Band won the Grammy for 2017 Best Rock Album for its "A Deeper Understanding".  LaMarca joined the alt-rock band in 2013, and plays guitar and other intstruments.

AP Government Students at Boardman High School will tour  C-SPAN’s new interactive  45-foot customized motor coach on Tuesday, Dec. 12.   This is an opportunity for students to see how C-SPAN plays a role in distributing political information nationally.

SENIOR HONORS ASSEMBLY graduation clip art

Boardman High School's Annual Honors Assembly will be held May 23, at 8:15 AM in the gymnasium.  The District will recognize the outstanding students in each department, introduce scholarship winners and present many special awards.  It is recognition of both the collective and individual achievements of the class of 2018.


State Auditor Dave Yost announced Monday, March 26,  that Boardman Local School District received an Auditor of State Award for its clean audit report.  Entities that receive the award  must meet a number of criteria upon completion of an audit including filing timely financial reports,following ethics, public meeting and public record criteria.

The "Too Good For Drugs" drug education program was highlighted in the Youngstown Vindicator December 5.  School Resource Officer Phil Merlo, Parent Coordinator Karen Kannal and Drug Educator Angela Sammartino have been coordinating the classes for 8th graders at Glenwood Junior High.

In her first 54-hole collegiate tournament, Jacinta Pikunas was spectacular breaking three program records en route to her first collegiate win. She now owns the lowest 18-hole score (66, -6), lowest 36-hole total (138, -6), and the lowest 54-hole total (210, -6) records in program history.

GLENWOOD STUDENT MAKES A MARK IN NATIONAL COMPETITIONS Brendan Butler competes in National HIstory and Geography events

Congratulations to Brendan Butler, an 8th grade student at Boardman Glenwood Jr High.  On June 1-3, Brendan competed in the National History Bee and in the US Geography Olympiad in Atlanta, GA.  Brendan  finished 2ND out of the top 156 8th graders in the NATION in the US Geography Olympiad!  


BHS Art Department and Industrial Technology Department join together to display student works in the gym on Thursday, May 17.  Amazing displays from Art, Photography and Graphic Design classes will be presented along with projects from Woods and Video Productions.


West Blvd. Elementary Students participated in a mini Relay for Life at  the school on Tuesday, May 15.  The theme this year is “Wipeout Cancer”, and students walked around the perimeter of the school for a half hour, then enjoyed a Kona Ice for the second half of the relay.

School Board Votes to Place Levy on the May Ballot Boardman School Board and Administrators

Boardman School Board Members voted on Monday, January 22, to place an Emergency Tax Levy Proposal on the ballot,  that would generate $4.9 million dollars annually for 10 years.  A first reading was approved by the Board at a Special Board Meeting on January 17.  To watch or read media reports, and for more details please read on...

OHIO TOP 100 SILVER MEDAL HIGH SCHOOL silver medal high school award

Boardman High School has once again made Ohio's Silver Medal List, according to US News and World Report.  At #95, it is the only Mahoning County High School in the top 100.  There are more than 600 public school districts in the State of Ohio.


Stadium Drive Elementary School is a nominee for the National Blue Ribbon School Award.  The Ohio Department of Education chose Stadium Drive as one of only 14 public schools in Ohio to nominate to the US Department of Education for the prestigious award.

Congratulations to Terry O'Halloran, Division I Ohio Swim Coach of the Year!  He's been the Spartan head swim coach for 33 years.  He's accompanied Boardman swimmers  to the state meet for 19 consecutive years...including 18 All-Americans and 4 State Champions.

Quiz Bowl Whiz Kids League Champs Again quiz Bowl Mahoning League Champs 2018

The win streak now stands at 57 consecutive matches, as the Spartan Quiz Bowl JV and Varsity teams win the Mahoning League Tournament February 24.  Some 26 teams competed.   The Spartan team hasn't lost in league play since 2014. 

Hour of Code Week Hour of Code December 4-8

Boardman Center Intermediate School is introducing the National Hour of Code to all 5th and 6th graders this week, December 4-8.  During hour-long sessions, students will have an opportunity to begin trying out their coding skills in the Tech Lab at Center.

Congratulations to Spartan Quarterback Named in WKBN's "Big 22" football helmet with 100 logo

The 2017 WKBN Big 22 Class of 2017 was announced Nov. 27. It is the twelfth year for the contest, and over 100 standout players were nominated for the honor.  Boardman’s dual threat quarterback Michael O’Horo threw for 1.233 yards. He also rushed for 653 yards with 22 total touchdowns.  Michael will be honored at a banquet in December.

Congratulations to Boardman Township on Fire Station 71.   A property swap betweem the township and Boardman Schools two years ago started the path to this new building that will serve as the community's main fire station.  It enabled  the township and schools to save money, and develop the buildings needed to provide good service and safety to Boardman residents and students.

Boys Swim Team State Qualifiers Gain All-Ohio Honors In 4 Events Boys relay team

Congratulations to seniors Callen Aulizia, Kyle Kimerer, and sophomores Noah Basista and Matthew DunLany as they received 1st Team All-Ohio honors in four events February 24,  at the OHSAA State Swim and Dive Tournament. The boys 400 Freestyle placed 5th in the state. The boys scored 88 points and were 9th overall at State.

AUDIT AWARD PRESENTED TO BOARDMAN SCHOOLS Auditor Liaison Jim Shaw presents clean audit award to Nick Ciarniello

State Auditor Liaison Jim Shaw presented the Clean Audit Award to Boardman Schools Treasurer Nick Ciarniello at the May 23 Board of Education Meeting.  Shaw congratulated Boardman, saying this award is not easy to achieve.  Only 10% of the more than 6,000 state audits done each year, receive a "Clean Audit Award."

BGJHS has been awarded the 2018 Purple Star Award for its support of military families and students.  A description of the services and supports that Glenwood offers to its military students and families can be found under the Guidance Counsel tab of our schools website.  We are one of only 44 schools in Ohio to be selected.

Boardman Places in Pittsburgh's Penguin Bowl Ocean bowl team members holding trophy

The Penguin Bowl is a regional competition for high school students on topics related to the study of Oceans.  This year, the tournament was held February 3 at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.  BHS took two teams,  and came home with a 3rd place trophy and the other team placed 5th among the 16 teams that competed.

Congratulations to senior, Holden Lipke, for making his "1000" point career milestone. He scored a total of 27 points in Friday's basketball game against Mooney...lifting the Spartans to a 61-43 win over the Cardinals.  The stands erupted as he made the "1000 point basket"   in the final minute of play.  Read on to see more pictures.

Goggles Show Dangers of Drugs and Alcohol student with fatal vision goggles in too good for drugs education program

Fifth Graders at Center Intermediate School each took a turn trying on a pair of  “Fatal Vision Goggles” as part of the district’s ‘Too Good for Drugs Program.’  The Goggles mimic the altered perceptions people experience when using drugs or alcohol.


A group of nine young musicians from Boardman Glenwood Junior High were selected to perform in the District 5 Middle School Honors Band Concert  at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown on Saturday, November 18.  They were among approximately 120 young musicians from a tri-county area.

Boardman elementary students are celebrating 100 Days of Learning in all kinds of ways this first full week of February!  Some are dressing the part of 100 year old Spartans, some are having fun at learning stations, and others are enjoying a balloon drop and making  "100" themed crowns.  Read on to see some photos from around the district.

Four Boardman High School Speech Team members qualified to compete in the Ohio Speech and Debate Association State Tournament held in Sylvania, Ohio on March 1-3. The tournament will feature the best competitors across Ohio.

Boardman Marching Band Surprises Woman on her 100th Birthday Marge LoCicero with Band Director Tom Ruggieri and Ethan Loosemoore

Marge LoCicero said she wanted a "Marching Band" for her 100th Birthday, and so the Boardman Spartan Marching Band made that happen.  On January 23, more than 50 band members marched in to surprise Marge at her birthday party at Marian Living Center.

People are still talking about the Celebration of Arts 100 year event!  January 20th at the BPAC was a fun-filled and fantastic evening and the turnout was incredible. Thanks to all who helped organize, volunteered their time, performed, or provided artwork.
