A group of Glenwood Junior High teachers teamed up to win a $2,700 National Grant from the GPD Employee’s Foundation. Together, the Glenwood group constructed a new Spartan Disc Golf Course right in time for this beautiful spring weather!
Glenwood Technology Teacher Tim Harker and Science teacher Eric Diefenderfer assembled the crew of teachers, administrators and maintenance staff who spent a few days over spring break doing the “dirty work” of building the course. It’s located near BGJHS, starting at the parking area, heading into the woods near the Spartan Cross Country Course, then into the grassy area toward the high school.
“We are so excited about this project,” said Physical Education teacher Danielle Siembida. “The 9-hole course will be used by our students, but will also be open to the Boardman Community.”
“We ask only that people yield to students after school hours.” said Phys Ed teacher Chuck Schiffhauer. “Disc Golf will be closed to the public during the school day when PE classes are using it, and during Cross Country Events.”
“It truly was a group effort,” said Harker. “We all had input to earn the grant, and science teachers helped build and plan, Phys Ed teachers researched the equipment needed, and influenced course layout and others like Music teacher Mike Shevock and Principal Bart Smith turned out over break just to dig and build.”
The GPD Employee’s Foundation is a non-profit group established in 2014, that focuses on enriching the K-12 public education experience. The Foundation channels donations that will also support at-risk children and those with medical and special needs.
