Every year, when Boardman High School celebrates its students who’ve earned scholarships in a packed Honors Assembly in the gym--- there are surprises. Most students who’ve completed applications and done all the work are not told in advance that they are the winners. They don’t know until their names are actually read aloud.
This year the Pandemic may change the crowded gymnasium atmosphere into a virtual event, (our Spartans will be watching comfortably at home with family) but the same “surprise feeling” will happen when they hear their names and see their photos on screen.
At this time, the Class of 2020 has earned and accepted more than 3.5 million dollars in scholarship money. That total is expected to increase, as more scholarship awards are continuing to arrive.
The annual senior awards ceremony honors high performing students in academics, athletics and the arts. There are 17 “First in Class” students with a perfect 4.0 GPA during their high school career.
Academically, the numbers are impressive: 81 students will receive “Honors Diplomas” for the rigorous coursework completed, 110 students will be “Honors Graduates” with a 3.5 GPA or above. 70 seniors also received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence for superior academic achievement in math and reading. There are a total of 320 members of the Class of 2020.
